Music For Airports

Just listened to an interview with Brian Eno. A person I've always found interesting in a nerdy kind of way. Some of his job titles would be, futurologist (paid to think up ideas for the future in the areas of urban design, transport and culture), music producer, musician, visual artist, composer (the clown responsible for the annoying windows start up music, ambient music), perfumer (is that what they're called?), arts festival curator, rock star (roxy music), political activist/commentator, newspaper columnist, author, and, thinker/strategist, amongst other pigeon holes.

How much can you pack into a life? The sheer breadth (never mind the depth) of what he does is astounding, I have trouble just thinking about surfing and going to work. Leonardo Da Vinci was also a huge breadth thinker type of guy.

Personally, I've never understood tatts. Skin is a such a difficult material for an artist to work. The medium tends to lend it self more to simple designs which I like, but, there is not a lot of interesting designs that I've noticed (although to be fair, I don't spend a lot of time looking). The pretend Tribal tatt and the Tramp Stamp tend to be seen as the cutting edge by many ink lovers. Why? Interesting to note that the Tatt has gone from dangerous underground to respectable middle class in the last ten to tweny years. People tend to put a lot of effort and time, or so it seems, into the design and actual process of getting "inked up".

About ads in comic books

What kid didn't want to own Sea Monkeys? I did, but what kid in Australia new how to send money to the US? It was just a dream in those days. Those kids in the US had the coolest stuff to play with, judging by these ads. I was insanely jealous.

Just the thought of the kids over there being able to buy x-ray specs seemed unfair.

I can't remember the Monkey in a Teacup ads at all. But the story behind the ad is so bizarre it defies belief. Wish I'd sent away for one.

I've always enjoyed looking at old magazine covers and marvelling at the amazing work that goes into thier design. Designed to sell, this type of graphics is surely the most underrated of our popular culture, scribbles on walls seem more important to most. Go figure.

Exhibition of Banksys art at Bristol Museum.

Banksy was in Australia at some stage. On my last trip down south I found the Banksy stencil on the side of Alfalfa House in Newtown (straight across the road from the Enmore Theatre). Some clown has tagged over the top of it now and its very faded, but still viewable. Bottom right hand corner very small from memory. I wonder if Banksy is linked in some way to the one of the bands from Bristol? (massive attack, tricky, Portishead etc).

Anyway, check out "nosey in newtown" for the pics (great little blog with great pics of the street art and eccentricities found around Newtown). I took heaps of pictures of the graffiti around Newtown last time I was there. I'll get around to posting them sometime.
